I wavered between 4.5 and 5 stars because there was something that felt just a bit "off" to me about Jennifer, how she acted, her death, and her child being made an orphan that bugged me a bit.

Ultimately I'm going with 5 stars, in part because Magic Breaks was my favorite installment since Magic Strikes. The past two books, Magic Slays and Magic Rises, felt like we were treading water with not too much progress (perhaps this is because the series went from seven books to ten). I also had a couple other issues with Rises, but that's beside the point. Breaks moved the story forward in new and interesting ways. It's action-packed, had solid character building for Kate, and was just plain fun to read.

I also bumped Breaks up to 5 stars because I absolutely loved Roland. He both was and wasn't what I was expecting, and I found myself incredibly entertained by him. Yes, he's evil. But he's also pretty awesome.

I wonder how Jim and Dali feel now that the role of Beast Lord and Consort have been thrust upon them with no warning. I could read a whole book on that alone. Hopefully we'll see plenty of them in the next book.
